USING CANCER REGISTRY DATA TO PROMOTE CANCER PREVENTION AND CONTROL: EXAMPLES FROM THE UNITED STATES
Abstract
Data from cancer registries are used for monitoring trends, planning and evaluating cancer control programs, assessing quality of care, forecasting future needs, and establishing or supporting etiologic hypothesis. They are also used to inform and support advocacy for public health policies (beyond cancer control programs) and guidelines. In this presentation, I will discuss examples of surveillance research at American Cancer Society that informed or supported advocacy for public health policies (e.g., the Affordable Care Act that expanded access to care to low-income adults), and screening guidelines in the United States. Notably, the examples will illustrate the importance of establishing strong partnership with civil societies, health systems, and governments at both local and national level to translate research findings into actions.
