WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION TO THE WORKSHOP
Abstract
Patient navigation, a standard of cancer care in the United States for the last 30 years, is a patient-centered intervention that offers personal guidance to patients, their families, and caregivers as they move through complex health care systems. The goal of patient navigation is to reduce the myriad barriers patients face to achieving timely diagnosis and completing treatment. The American Cancer Society has partnered with Kenyatta National Hospital and the Uganda Cancer Institute, two large national referral hospitals, to design and implement two of the first comprehensive treatment navigation programs in Sub-Saharan Africa. This session will include a panel discussing the experience to date devising responsive patient navigation programs in these two settings as well as a presentation on ACS’ plans to facilitate the design and uptake of patient navigation in other cancer care systems in low-resourced settings in the future.
